Public Speaking In A Second Language
Exploring how we write speeches
Last week I was fortunate enough to win the UK Business Speaker of the Year contest and be crowned the official ‘UK Business Speaker of the Year’ for 2012.
My speech on ‘the Morale Margin’ explained why the business community needs to shift its focus from profit and cost margins and move towards ‘the morale margin’ to get ahead in a recession.
Designed to inspire, not instruct, the speech challenged traditional thinking and suitably inspired the audience for the judges to award me the winners’ prize. I can honestly say it was one of my proudest moments in public speaking and the honour has still not sunk in!
The UK Business Speaker of the Year contest brought together 24 of the top business speakers in Britain and culminated in an evening event featuring the top 8 speakers battling it out for the title. The top three were then selected by judges Lara Morgan (a successful entrepreneur and speaker), Dr Max Atkinson (author and former speechwriter for Paddy Ashdown) and Ross Thornley (entrepreneur and owner of RT Media, a branding agency).
What next?
I hope to be doing more speaking in the coming year – training others in public speaking and talking at corporate events on the morale margin and other short, sharp pieces of inspiration that we could all do with in our business lives!
